"Normal Use Cases"
Targets:
Best Practices For Target Construction Call For: Log Rounds And/Or Lumber Held Together With Wood Glue & Dowel Rods.
Using Metal in the construction of your target is NOT recommended and damages sustained to knives from metal and/or stone MAY NOT be covered under our standard warranty/satisfaction guarantee.
We STRONGLY recommend using wooden dowels as opposed to metal screws anywhere that your implements may impact / penetrate the target.
Surrounding Ground:
Best practices are to set your throwing range up over dirt/grass, being careful and considerate to try and avoid concrete, rocks, metal screws in your target construction, etc.
Throwing over asphalt, concrete, anything harder than dirt essentially is NOT recommended and MAY NOT be covered under our (AFGK, NBK, and/or Mcnees) standard warranty/satisfaction guarantee.
Backboards:
Wooden backboards are best in my experience.
Proper maintenance & care is important to keep your knives in optimal condition for as long as possible.
1. Before throwing, always check your knives for small burrs in the steel that can happen as a result of hard impacts.
(generally I find this comes from knives hitting one another)
Burrs can be easily smoothed out with a piece of sandpaper, a file, or even in some cases a stone with a relatively abrasive surface.
2. To protect your knives from rust, regular use of oil for cleaning and storage is recommended.
We have found that WD40 and Remington Oil works quite well.
3. For storage, a dehumidifier can be tremendously helpful to keep your implements from rusting.
4. Bent Tips, when your knives come into contact with anything harder than your wooden targets (i.e. Concrete, other knives, metal screws, etc, it may become necessary to file out small bends & deformations in the tips. This is often best achieved with several passes of a metal file, you should be able to get your knives back to range ready in just a few minutes with relative ease. Happy throwing!
